To detect targets, the sensor emits a laser beam to make it reflect from the surface of the target, and receives the reflected beam to detect the target. If the beam is interrupted, the detector triggers an alarm. This feature sets the bar when it comes to quick set up.
Inductive proximity switches are activated when a conductor of any sort comes within a certain range of the sensor. For targets with similar colors or materials, the difference between light and dark is not always clear, which can result in unstable detection. If you're familiar with an arduino or raspberry pi you could just add on a $40 laser range finder with ~100m range. Technical Details.
